Studying the Word

A Royal Priesthood

You have a High Calling in Christ

To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood— and He has made us to be a kingdom of priests to His God and Father—to Him be the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Revelation 5:1-6

Forgetting what lies behind and reaching forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:13-14

And coming to Him as to a living stone which has been rejected by men, but is chief and precious in the sight of God, you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. 1 Peter 2:4-5

First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers, petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:1-4

It is time to do your job

God has called you into fellowship with His Son, Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:9. And what is that calling? Jesus is ever before the Father’s throne making intercession as your great High Priest, Hebrews 7:25, and where Jesus is, that is where His disciple will be. John 12:26 (“If anyone serves Me, he must follow Me; and where I am, there My servant will be also; if anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him”). Jesus lived among us for thirty-three years, He died once for all on the Cross, but He is a High Priest FOREVER. Hebrews 6:20. And Jesus has qualified you to join Him in His divine office. By His Blood Jesus has released you from your sins and made you a kingdom of priests unto the Father. Revelation 1:5-6.

When He had taken the book, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down

before the Lamb, each one holding a harp and golden bowls full of incense, which are

the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are You to take

the book and to break its seals; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your Blood

men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation. You have made them to be

a kingdom and priests to our God; and they will reign upon the earth.”

Revelation 5:8-9

In fellowship with your High Priest Jesus you come with confidence into the Holy of Holies to join in His prayer of intercession, bringing about the salvation of souls and praying His plans into the earth.

Therefore, since we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus

the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession (in Greek, homologia, speaking the same words). For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin. Therefore, let us draw near with confidence to the Throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. Hebrew 4:14-16

You have a heavenly calling to prayer before the Father as an intercessor, for that is the ministry of the priest.

Jesus is the living stone, rejected by men, but choice and precious in the

Father’s eyes as the corner stone, and you, in Him, are all living stones being

built up to a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices

acceptable to God our Father through Jesus Christ.

1 Peter 2:4-5

When Peter wrote that you are a holy priesthood offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God the Father through Jesus Christ, he understood the office of the priests under the Old Testament. He had known it all his life as set forth in the Torah, and as he observed in the Temple at Jerusalem. And he told you that you, though you were not priests under the Old Covenant, have now been made into a royal priesthood, a kingdom of priests to serve our God and Father.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. 1 Peter 2:9-10

The priest under the Old Covenant, which was a shadow of the good things to come, Hebrews 10:1, interceded with God for the people and the nation. The priest offered the blood of the spotless lamb at the altar after it was slain by the sinner at the door of the meeting tent.       Leviticus 1:3-4.

The priest offered the burnt offering upon the bronze altar for the sinner to make atonement and obtain forgiveness for the sinner and/or for the nation, depending on the offering. Leviticus 1 – Leviticus 16. And this offering by fire was of a fragrant aroma before Almighty God. Leviticus 1:9, Leviticus 2:5. And the High Priest would enter the Holy of Holies and sprinkle the blood of the lamb upon the mercy seat (the propitiatory). Hebrews 9:7.

The former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers

because they were prevented by death from continuing,

but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues forever,

holds His priesthood permanently. Therefore, He is able also

to save to the uttermost those who draw near to God through Him,

since He always lives to make intercession for them.

Hebrews 7:23-25

When the sinner brought the spotless male lamb to the doorway of the tabernacle in the wilderness, the sinner first laid his hand on the head of the spotless lamb that it would be accepted to make atonement on his behalf. Leviticus 1:4.

This is mirrored by the Father’s imputing all your sins to Jesus so that in Him you are made righteous with God’s own righteousness, the righteousness of the spotless Lamb whom you have received as your own.  2 Corinthians 5:21. When you take Jesus as your Lord, His righteousness becomes yours. Love consists not in that you have loved God, but that He has loved you and given His Son as propitiation for your sins, and not your sins only but those of the whole world. 1 John 4:10. The sinner then would himself slay the lamb or bullock before the LORD. It is your sins that slew Jesus. John 1:29. Know and receive this of first importance, Jesus died for your sins. 1 Corinthians 15:3. And then Aaron’s sons, the priests, offered up the blood as they poured it out and sprinkled it around and upon the altar. And they did this with all the various offerings, such as the sin offering, peace offering, and shame offering, for themselves, for the sinner, for the people and for the nation. Leviticus 1- Leviticus 16.

Are you beginning to realize your duties as a priest? Listen to what the apostle Paul knew from the great High Priest Jesus who appeared to him, about your ministry as a priest:

First of all, then, I urge that entreaties and prayers,

petitions and thanksgivings, be made on behalf of all men.

1 Timothy 2:1

You should take this seriously, God is depending on you. Many are lost because even though their sins have been taken by Jesus they have not put out their hand (the hand of their tongue, Proverbs 18:21, in confessing Him as Lord) to receive Him as their Savior, their sacrificial Lamb that made atonement for their sins. You must offer Him for them and sprinkle His blood before the Father in prayer and pour it out upon the altar in Heaven, and then, as Moses would do, sprinkle and pour it out on the sinner himself to do a deep and cleansing work in Him.             Hebrews 9:19-22. And remember this is SPIRITUAL sacrifice, not physical. 1 Peter 2:3-5. Of old, the priests offered the physical blood of lambs, goats, rams and bulls, but now you offer spiritual sacrifice of that heavenly spotless blood of the true Lamb that He Himself has already laid upon the mercy seat in Heaven giving eternal redemption and speaking louder than the blood of Abel for the forgiveness of every person from the beginning to the end of time, calling you to redemption, calling you to everlasting righteousness. Hebrews 9:11-15; Hebrews 12:24.

But when Christ appeared as a high priest of the good things to come,

He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle,

not made with hands, that is to say, not of this creation;

and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood,

He entered the holy place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption.

Hebrews 9:11-12

And in Paul’s first letter to Timothy, we learn more about our duties as a royal priesthood, you are to offer prayers, petitions, and thanksgivings for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity. And such prayer is good and acceptable in God’s sight for He desires all men to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:3. You can save souls by prayer, bringing the spotless Lamb Himself before the Father, for He is both the victim and the High Priest. And you are wise to save souls.          Proverbs 11:30.

And then Paul goes on to tell you who you are praying with as a royal priest: “for there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all, the testimony given at the proper time.” 1 Timothy 2:5-6. Always remember you are entering the throne room with Jesus your brother, High Priest, Lamb of sacrifice and kinsman redeemer, confidently declaring His Word and praying with and in Him. He is our forerunner behind the veil and He has prepared a place there for us, so that we too may stand with our High Priest in the Holy of Holies to receive mercy and obtain grace just when we need it. Hebrews 7:19-20; Hebrews 4:12-16; John 14:1-3.

It is time to stop offering selfish, complaining, begging, whining prayers! It is time to know the greatness of our office, the beauty of the dignity in which God has clothed us—holy garments for glory and for beauty, Exodus 28:2, 40, and the great authority God has given us right at His very throne behind the veil in the Holy of Holies, where no one of old could enter but the High Priest Himself. But now we are in Him and He ushers us in as our forerunner before us! Hebrews 6:19-20. For the Father has made us unto Himself a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, so that we may proclaim the excellencies of Jesus who has called us out of darkness into His marvelous light; for once we were not a people, but now we are God’s people; we had not received mercy, but now we have received mercy.1 Peter 2:9-10.

In the book of Hebrews, you learn more about your office in Christ Jesus:

Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus,

the Apostle [in Greek, “Apostolos”: a messenger, delegate, envoy, one sent on

a mission] and High Priest [in Greek, “Archiereus”: chief, preeminent, the leader

among priests] of your confession [in Greek, “homologia,” which is made

up of two words, “homou,” which means “the same,” and “logo,”

which means “word,” also, “lego,” which means “speak”].

Hebrews 3:1

Consider Him—His merits, His love, His beauty, and these are yours in Him too. 1 John 14:17; 2 Corinthians 8:9; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Galatians 3:27 (“For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.”). Do you see what the amazing passage of Hebrews 3:1 quoted above is telling you? You are partakers of the heavenly calling to prayer and fellowship with the Father as a royal priesthood to offer up spiritual sacrifices through Jesus Christ unto God, your Father! 1 Peter 2:5, 9; Revelation 1:5-6. And how do you do this? By speaking the same Word with Jesus—He is the Apostle (envoy) and High Priest of your “homologia.” He is your great High Priest over the kingdom of priests that He has made you by His Blood. Revelation 5:9-10. And just as only brothers who were sons of Aaron could be priests under the Old Covenant, so now your brother Jesus has made you priests to the One He calls “Our Father.” And that is none other than your creator, your Father and your God.

Ours, like the disciples, is a ministry of prayer and the Word. Acts 6:4. God foretold this through the prophet Hosea:

Take words with you and return to the LORD. Say to Him, “Take away all iniquity

and receive us graciously, that we may present the bullocks of our lips.”

Hosea 14:2

This passage denotes the new priesthood offering spiritual sacrifice. God foretold it to His prophet Hosea, no longer offering the bullock that was slaughtered as the sin offering for Aaron and his sons, Leviticus 4:3, but the bullocks of our lips. Offering Jesus to the Father for the sins of the world in intercessory prayer in the Spirit, from our seat in Heaven with Christ. Ephesians 2:6.

In the tabernacle in the wilderness, the design of which was given to Moses on Mt. Sinai in exact detail, Exodus 25-31, and later in the great temple that Solomon built, the design of which was given in detail to his father, David, 1 Chronicles 28:19, just outside the veil before entering the Holy of Holies, was the golden altar of incense. Exodus 30:6; Exodus 40:5. And the fire of that altar was always lit, to offer up incense before the LORD on the burning coals. Exodus 30:7-8.

Aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it; he shall burn it every morning when

when he trims the lamps. When Aaron trims the lamps at twilight, he shall burn incense.

There shall be perpetual incense before the LORD throughout your generations.

Exodus 30:7-8

The High Priest could only enter behind the veil in a cloud of incense. Leviticus 16:13. And you know from reading the Book of Revelation that the incense before His throne in Heaven, presented at the golden altar in golden bowls, is your prayers. Revelation 8:3-5. The prayers of His kingdom of priests. Revelation 5:8. Your prayers before the LORD are as a fragrant cloud of incense. David once sang to God: “May my prayer rise up as incense before You, and the lifting of my hands as the evening sacrifice.” Psalm 141:2. Already he was offering spiritual sacrifice before the LORD as a king and priest—a royal priest. David was a prophet and He knew of Christ, just read Psalm 22, and though he was not of the line of Aaron, but of Judah, he sat before the Ark of the Covenant and he offered burnt offerings. 2 Samuel 6:17 (“So they brought in the ark of the LORD and set it in its place inside the tent which David had pitched for it; and David offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the LORD.”)

Remember that the prayers, acts of love, and almsgiving of Cornelius came up before God’s throne? Acts 10:4. So too, your prayers, acts of love, almsgiving, and tithes and offerings come up to the Lord as a fragrant offering. Philippians 4:15-19 (“You yourselves also know, Philippians, that at the first preaching of the gospel, after I left Macedonia, no church shared with me in the matter of giving and receiving but you alone; for even in Thessalonica you sent a gift more than once for my needs. Not that I seek the gift itself, but I seek for the profit which increases to your account. But I have received everything in full and have an abundance; I am amply supplied, having received from Epaphroditus what you have sent, a fragrant aroma, an acceptable sacrifice, well-pleasing to God. And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.”)

Come and fulfill your priestly office. God is counting on you to authorize Him to stop national disasters, plagues and storms by your intercession and spiritual sacrifice before Him. Do you not recall?

David built there an altar to the LORD and offered burnt offerings and

peace offerings. Thus, the LORD was moved by prayer for the land,

and the plague was held back from Israel.

2 Samuel 24:25

How much more now for you who are not offering the blood of bulls and goats but of Jesus Himself!

For you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold

from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers,

but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless,

the blood of Christ. For He was foreknown before the foundation

of the world but has appeared in these last times for the sake of you who

through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and

gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. Since you have

in obedience to the truth purified your souls for a sincere love of the brethren,

fervently love one another from the heart, and pray for one another, for you

have been born again not of seed which is perishable but imperishable,

that is, through the living and enduring Word of God.

1 Peter 1:18-23

The LORD has given you such great dignity and responsibility! He pours His Holy Spirit on you and in you and puts His Words in your mouth. Isaiah 59:21. Do something with these wonderful gifts that are yours. God is counting on you as His royal priesthood to pray His Kingdom and His Will into the earth. He is looking for intercessors to save souls for Him, for His will is that all men be saved and come to know the truth, but he needs you to pray for others and for the nation.

I searched for a man among them who would

build up the wall and stand in the gap before Me for the land,

so that I would not destroy it; but I found no one.

Ezekiel 22:30

Now the LORD saw, and it was displeasing in His sight

that there was no justice. And He saw that there was no man,

and was astonished that there was no one to intercede.

Isaiah 59:15-16

Have you ever taken your high calling and vocation seriously? The priest interceded for the people, offering the burnt offering, the grain offering, the peace offering, the sin offering and the shame offering for atonement, mercy and grace (Leviticus 1- Leviticus 9), the priest offered the fragrant incense before the LORD, Exodus 30:6-9; 2 Chronicles 13:11 (“Every morning and evening they burn to the Lord burnt offerings and fragrant incense, and the showbread is set on the clean table, and the golden lampstand with its lamps is ready to light every evening.”), the priest instructed the people in God’s Word, Nehemiah 8:9; Deuteronomy 33:10 (“They shall teach Your ordinances to Jacob, And Your law to Israel. They shall put incense before You, and whole burnt offerings on Your altar.”), the priest instructed the king and the king consulted the High Priest for national decisions using the urim and thummin. Exodus 28:30 (“Moreover, he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall inquire for him by the judgment of the Urim before the Lord. At his command they shall go out and at his command they shall come in, both he and the sons of Israel with him, even all the congregation.”), and the priest also lit the lamps of the Menorah and tended their wicks each evening and morning before the LORD. Exodus 30:7-8; Exodus 27:20-21 (“You shall charge the sons of Israel, that they bring you clear oil of beaten olives for the light, to make a lamp burn continually. In the tent of meeting, outside the veil which is before the testimony, Aaron and his sons shall keep it in order from evening to morning before the Lord; it shall be a perpetual statute throughout their generations for the sons of Israel.”). And the priest, to do all this, had to know God’s Word and know it well. And the priest tithed the tithe he was given. Numbers 18:26 (“Moreover, you shall speak to the Levites and say to them, ‘When you take from the sons of Israel the tithe which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then you shall present an offering from it to the Lord, a tithe of the tithe.”)

Many of those who sleep in the dust of the ground will awake,

these to everlasting life, but the others to disgrace and everlasting contempt.

Those who have insight will shine brightly like the brightness of the expanse of heaven,

and those who lead the many to righteousness, like the stars forever and ever.

Daniel 12:2-3

And as a royal priesthood, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another so that you may be healed, for the effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much. James 5:16. Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving; praying in your heart, right at the throne of grace at all times. Not only in your homes, but when you meet with people at your workplace, school, market, etc. that God will open up a door for the Word, so that you may speak forth the mystery of Christ in a way that will touch hearts and save souls.  Colossians 4:1-3. Take up the Sword of the Spirit, which is God’s Word and with all prayer and petition, pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all believers, and especially that utterance may be given to those preaching and teaching the good news of Jesus Christ, so they may speak out with boldness the mystery of the gospel. Ephesians 6:17-19.

And it was the priests who blew the trumpets that called the congregation to gather in prayer and praise, alerted them to an attack of the enemy, called them to battle, and reminded God to come down and fight for them. Numbers 10, Joshua 6:20; 1 Chronicles 16:6; 2 Chronicles 5:12; 2 Chronicles 29:26; Ezra 3:10, Number 10:8 (“The priestly sons of Aaron, moreover, shall blow the trumpets; and this shall be for you a perpetual statute throughout your generations.”)

Do you see why God tells you to pray without ceasing and to go forth to make disciples of all the nations? 1 Thessalonians 5:17; Matthew 28:19. It is part of your ministry as His royal priesthood, His own special possession, a people set apart from darkness into His own marvelous light.

Have you ever taken your calling seriously? Your high calling in Christ? You are a royal priest and one to be welcomed at all times in the very Holy of Holies, right at the awesome throne of grace. You view yourself too small. The Israelites never took the promised land for they saw themselves as “grasshoppers.” They never saw themselves in the mirror of God’s Word. Start seeing yourself in the mirror of His Word and you will be amazed at how He sees you in Christ- beautiful, blameless, holy, righteous, victorious, more than a conqueror, and a royal priest. Start walking in your royal dignity in the life of good deeds God prepared for you in advance in Christ. But above all, fulfill your priestly calling, so many souls are depending on it for salvation. Take up your authority and stop letting Satan run all over you, your family and your nation.

Come and help God to move hearts, families, cities and nations. He is depending on you, His royal priesthood. Why are you standing there idle all day? You could be praying. So much is depending on your prayers. You have a job to do. And it is the most important calling there is, both in Heaven and on earth. It is what Christ is doing in Heaven and you, as His body, should be doing on earth. And you are not alone, you are surrounded by a cloud of witnesses all joining in prayer with you and cheering you on. Hebrews 12:1, 22-23.

And you can pray all this in the structure of the prayer that our High Priest taught us—the “Our Father.” You come into the Holy of Holies as you pray, “Our Father who art in Heaven.” You then enter the realm of the supernatural. “Hallowed be your Name.” Here you declare the Names of the LORD as He has revealed them to us in His Word and call upon the Name for your need of the moment: The LORD my healer, the LORD my peace, the LORD my provider, my refuge, my fortress, the God in whom I trust, my glory and the lifter of my countenance, my deliverer, my help. Be like David and declare many of God’s glorious titles that contain such great treasure.

And continue with the words, “Your Kingdom come, Your Will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.” Here is where you launch out in your priestly prayers about Kingdom business. You pray for government leaders, nations, people to be saved and come to know the truth, Kingdom projects, and healing and peace. And after seeking to take territory for the Kingdom, you pray for your personal needs and those of others, “Give us this day our daily bread.” Pray for your needs and desires and the many needs of others you know, for family, friends, and wherever there is a need.  “And forgive us our trespasses,” the prayer of confession and repentance for yourself, others and your nation. “As we forgive those who trespass against us,” time to declare and deny yourself and make the determination of your will that you have forgiven those who have hurt you. “And lead us not into temptation,” here pray that you will not be put to the test in anything, for the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak. Pray a guard over your heart. “But deliver us from evil,” pray and rebuke storms, earthquakes, disasters, accidents, harm of any kind and cover yourself, your family, your school, your city, your state, and your nation in the Blood of Jesus.
