Therefore, thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria, ‘He will not come to this city or shoot an arrow there; and he will not come before it with a shield, or throw up a siege ramp against it. By the way that he came, by the same he will return, and he will not come to this city,’ declares the LORD. ‘For I will defend this city to save it for My own sake and for My servant David’s sake.’ Isaiah 37:33-35.
Today your LORD (יהוה) God says:
Have you ever wondered what made David stand out to Me as so special that I made covenant with him that from his descendants the Messiah would be born? That I promised him that his throne would be established forever with a descendant of his own upon it? Jesus calls Himself the root and offspring of David, and still does. Revelation 22:16. I tell you that I helped David wherever he went. 2 Samuel 8:6, 14. I was with David and from the day I told My prophet Samuel to anoint him to be king, My Spirit came mightily upon David from that day forward. 1 Samuel 16:13.
I showed great favor to David. Even after he departed from this life, during the reign of Hezekiah, I told Hezekiah through My prophet Isaiah, that I answered Hezekiah’s prayer and preserved the city from the attack of Assyria for My own sake and for the sake of My servant David. I never changed My promises and love for him, even when he sinned, he repented and I took care of that, and as it is written: “I have found David My servant; with My holy oil I have anointed him, with whom My hand will be established; My arm also will strengthen him. The enemy will not deceive him, nor the son of wickedness afflict him. But I shall crush his adversaries before him, and strike those who hate him. My faithfulness and My lovingkindness will be with him, and in My name his horn will be exalted. I shall also set his hand on the sea and his right hand on the rivers. He will cry to Me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the rock of my salvation.’ “I also shall make him My firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth. My lovingkindness I will keep for him forever, and My covenant shall be confirmed to him. So I will establish his seed forever and his throne as the days of heaven. If his sons forsake My law and do not walk in My judgments, if they violate My statutes and do not keep My commandments, then I will punish their transgression with the rod and their iniquity with stripes. But I will not break off My lovingkindness from him, nor deal falsely in My faithfulness. My covenant I will not violate, nor will I alter the utterance of My lips. Once I have sworn by My holiness; I will not lie to David, his seed shall endure forever and his throne as the sun before Me. It shall be established forever like the moon, and the witness in the sky is faithful.” Psalm 89:20-37.
Now, I will give you the answer from My Word of why I so favor David and still do. Go to the preaching and teaching of My apostle Paul. Paul and his companions put out to sea from Paphos and came to Perga in Pamphylia; but John left them and returned to Jerusalem. But going on from Perga, they arrived at Pisidian Antioch, and on the Sabbath day they went into the synagogue and sat down. After the reading of the Law and the Prophets the synagogue officials sent to them, saying, “Brethren, if you have any word of exhortation for the people, say it.” Paul stood up, and motioning with his hand said, “Men of Israel, and you who fear God, listen: The God of this people Israel chose our fathers and made the people great during their stay in the land of Egypt, and with an uplifted arm He led them out from it. For a period of about forty years He put up with them in the wilderness. When He had destroyed seven nations in the land of Canaan, He distributed their land as an inheritance—all of which took about four hundred and fifty years. After these things He gave them judges until Samuel the prophet. Then they asked for a king, and God gave them Saul the son of Kish, a man of the tribe of Benjamin, for forty years. After He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, ‘I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after My heart, who will do all My will.’ From the descendants of this man, according to promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus. Acts 13:13-23.
I do not see as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but I look at the heart. 1 Samuel 16:7. And in David, I found a man after My heart who would do ALL My will, all My inclination. He knew how to step aside and get My plans for things and then he went full speed ahead to carry them out. Abraham did the same, and David is from his line.
David had a heart that loved Me and sought Me. He sang, “As the deer longs for the water brooks, so my soul longs for You, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God; when shall I come and see the face of God?” Psalm 42:1-2. “One thing I have asked from the LORD, that I shall seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the delightful beauty of the LORD and to inquire in His temple.” Psalm 27:4. Of all the patriarchs and prophets, David was the only one who ever told Me he loved Me. “I love You, O LORD, my strength.” Psalm 18:1.
David was primarily a worshipper. And he pulled everyone who came close to him into worship. “O magnify the LORD with me and let us exalt His name together.” Psalm 34:3. He turned the Levites into round the clock worshippers trained in the songs David wrote in praise of Me. He was extravagant with Me, he stored up the treasuries of nations that he conquered to put them aside for the building of a most magnificent house for Me, he even drew up all the plans for his son Solomon to use in building as well as providing all the provisions needed.
And David had a great desire to honor Me and see Me honored. Since the Ark of the Covenant had been taken from the dwelling place in Shiloh by Eli’s sons and captured by the Philistines and then returned by them to Israel, no one had ever cared to seek it out or put it back in the Holy of Holies. David would take no rest once he was established as king in Jerusalem until he located it and finally brought it to Mt. Zion and pitched a tent for it near his palace and it was there he instituted the round the clock worship before Me. He had the ark of My presence close by him and that was what he sought and longed for. It made him dance for joy as they brought it up and offer burnt sacrifices and peace offerings. It was after that when I told him of My promise that his throne would be forever before Me—that I Myself would build him a house. And that was Jesus. He spoke of His body as the temple that would be torn down and three days later raised up. And when Gabriel announced his birth to Mary, he told her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name Him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end.” Luke 1:30-33.
There are three that stand out through all My Word and with those three I made Covenant and they are all from one line, the line of Noah’s son Shem. Do you know the ones of whom I am speaking? Abraham, David, and Jesus. These three. All three were men after My own heart that did ALL My Will in their lives. But only One was without sin and only One could redeem the human race and only One was God and man.
My Covenant with Moses was with My people, the entire nation of Israel. My Covenant with Noah was with mankind and beasts—all creation. But the Covenants I made with Abraham, David, and Jesus were personal for them and for their descendants, their seed, their brethren.
To Abraham and his descendants I gave the land of Israel and the Blessing. To David I gave an eternal throne from which the Messiah would reign. And to Jesus I gave the fullness of redemption, justification, glorification and salvation. The Covenant with My Son contained all the promises to Abraham and his descendants, to David and his descendants, and all I have and am. It gives those who believe in Jesus eternal life and My Kingdom. All My magnificent covenant promises became “yes” to you in Jesus, because when you are sealed in Christ you enter, through Him, the covenant He made with Me and sealed in His own precious blood.
Once you were strangers to the Covenants, but now, in and through Jesus, you have entered into the new and everlasting Covenant, a very good place to be, that is, the grace in which you now stand by faith in Him who loved you and gave His life for you. In Him, all I have is yours.
I love you. Will you say the same to Me? Moses commanded the people to love Me but no one ever sang of how they loved Me until David, it was just always Me telling you how much I love you, but David’s heart went after My heart.
